FINAL: Syracuse 80, LSU 57
Judah Mintz put on a career-night against the Tigers with 33 points, including a 13-of-15 night at the free throw line. His ability to get to the charity stripe has become a valuable asset for the Orange offense.
Chris Bell auditioned to be the Robin to Judah’s Batman with a 20-point night. Bell scorched the nets from beyond the arc with a 6-of-8 shooting mark.
Maliq Brown pounded the glass for 10 rebounds.
LSU couldn’t hit water if it fell out of a boat from 3-point range. the Tigers were 2-of-22. Yikes.
The Orange improve to 5-2 on the season and will play its first ACC game of the season on Saturday at Virginia.
SECOND HALF
2:41 remaining: Syracuse 79, LSU 53
An impressive showing here at the Dome tonight for the Orange after the first-half got off to a staggered start.
Judah Mintz with 33, Chris Bell with 20 points, a great recovery on the boards and a solid defensive night.
7:53 remaining: Syracuse 66, LSU 48
Judah Mintz and Chris Bell have done the scoring but someone who needs a shoutout here is Maliq Brown. He’s been a nuisance on the boards for the Orange with nine. He’s a big reason why Syracuse swung the rebounding margin in its favor to 34-31 at the moment.
Bell is 6-of-8 from 3-point range and has 17 points.
A quieter second-half for Judah as he’s on hold at 29 points.
9:54 remaining: Syracuse 66, LSU 44
It may be the Judah Mintz show here but Chris Bell is trying to get on stage. He has 12 points in the second half with a 5-of-7 mark from 3-point range.
11:37 remaining: Syracuse 58, LSU 40
The rest of the Orange are waking up. What a lovely play with 11:45 remaining as Quadir Copeland dished a behind-the-back pass to Maliq Brown who kissed it off the glass.
A notable change on the boards. Syracuse is now out-rebounding LSU 31-30. SU was down 12 boards in that category at one point of the game.
12:34 remaining: Syracuse 56, LSU 40
A great sequence of ball movement led to a 3-pointer by Chris Bell (hey someone other than Judah scored!) with about 13:00 remaining. Bell hit another 3-pointer to put the Orange up by 16.
LSU is a paltry 2-of-17 from 3-point range.
16:09 remaining: Syracuse 43, LSU 34
As much as it has been the Judah Mintz Show here at the Dome with a career-high 29 points (and counting), his backcourt mate, JJ Starling, is struggling. He has just 2 points, is 0-5 from the field and has four turnovers.
Judah Mintz is feeling it tonight, folks. He has eight points already in this half and a total of 25. He has just three less points than LSU and more than his teammates combined at the moment.
He’s been solid around the rim but is also 2-of-2 at the three-point line.
HALFTIME: Syracuse 33, LSU 28
Judah Mintz has plowed the road here for Syracuse with 17 points including a really pretty one-handed slam and a 10-of-11 mark at the free throw line. Jalen Reed leads LSU with 9 points.
LSU has controlled the boards to the tune of 26-20 with some particular success on the offensive glass at 12-8.
Syracuse is a solid 14-of-15 at the free throw line.
First Half
3:02 remaining: LSU 27, Syracuse 25.
Not a pretty stretch of basketball. At one point, SU shot 1-of-7 and LSU was 1-of-8. Both teams are shooting around 30% at the moment.
Syracuse is struggling on the boards, particularly in giving up offensive rebounds. LSU has 12 to SU’s 4. LSU’s overall advantage stands at 24-14.
I do have good news. SU is 12-of-12 at the free throw line.
7:06 remaining: LSU 21, Syracuse 19.
LSU went on a 7-0 run to take a 3-point lead, but a Chris Bell 3-pointer tied it at 19. The Tigers answered to take the lead into the timeout.
SU’s shot selection at times continues to be ...let’s say it could be better.
The Orange are shooting 6-of-20 (30%) overall.
11:49 remaining: Syracuse 16, LSU 14
Naheem McLeod has been active in the paint so far. He has six points and four rebounds. He also had a really cheap, all-ball foul called against him.
Judah Mintz leads the Orange with seven points.
15:57 remaining: Syracuse 8, LSU 6
The Orange have already hit two from beyond the arc, a good sign perhaps for a team that has really struggled in that area of the court this season.
Judah Mintz and Justin Taylor each hit a 3-pointer.
Pregame
Syracuse returns to the court for the first time since a three-game swing in the Maui Invitational in Honolulu.
The Orange suffered double-digit losses to two highly ranked teams in the country before overwhelming Division II Chaminade.
Louisiana State portends to be a better litmus test for a young team that is finding its way under first-year coach Adrian Autry. The Orange stormed back from a 24-point deficit in its previous home game against Colgate to snap a two-game skid against the Raiders.
The matchup against the Tigers in the SEC/ACC Challenge is a key non-conference game as the Orange looks to strengthen its NCAA resume before diving into ACC play Saturday at Virginia.
Syracuse goes with its same starting lineup of Judah Mintz, JJ Starling, Chris Bell, Justin Taylor and Naheem McLeod.
