PAGE 20A THURSDAY JULY 25 1985 DURHAM MORNING HERALD Obituaries Second Swedish Man Gets Heart Transplant STOCKHOLM Sweden (AP) A Swedish man became the second recipient of a natural heart transplant Wednesday in a three-hour operation performed by the same surgeon who implanted the first permanent artificial heart outside the United States Dr Bjarne Semb performed the operation at Karolinska Hospital his first natural heart transplant surgery Semb headed the team that implanted a permanent artificial heart in a Swedish businessman April 7 The Karolinska announcement identified recipient as a 47-year-old Stockholm man who wanted to remain anonymous It listed his postoperative condition as satisfactory The man was admitted to Karolinska about two weeks ago and the operation was performed after his condition grew worse Tuesday said Semb a 45-year-old Norwegian heart surgeon only possible way to save him was a transplantation and as we received a suitable heart we decided to go ahead with the he said Sweden has a law which states a person is legally dead when the heart stops functioning Consequently donor hearts have to be imported because working hearts be taken from someone who may be brain dead A hospital source who asked not to be identified said the donor heart came from Britain Originally plans had been for the patient to go to London to have the heart transplant at the Harefield Hospital where more than a dozen Swedes have already undergone the natural heart transplant surgery Instead he became the first beneficiary of a Social Welfare Board license to Karolinska allowing the hospital to conduct three natural heart transplant operations on condition the donors come from abroad The first natural heart implant performed in Sweden occurred nearly a year ago at Sahlgrenska Hospital at Goteborg Meanwhile first and the fourth recipient of a mechanical Jarvik-7 heart 53-year-old businessman Leif Sten-berg was reported in good condition more than a hundred days after his operation at Karolinska Stenberg who emerged from anonymity at a 90-minute press conference last Friday was reported to have gone to an inn on the outskirts of Stockholm
